Hitting the Rankings Jackpot
Chapman, David W.
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v40 n6 p14-17 Nov-Dec 2008
Recently, Samford University was ranked 27th in the nation in a report released by "Forbes" magazine. In this article, the author relates how the people working at Samford University were surprised at its ranking. Although Samford is the largest privately institution in Alabama, its distinguished academic achievements aren't even well-recognized in the state--a part of the country where varsity athletes are infinitely more sought after than valedictorians. The Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP), the agency responsible for the rankings published in "Forbes," professed a noble goal: to evaluate schools on how well they educate their students instead of according to the kind of students they recruit. For institutions without billion-dollar endowments or Ivy League reputations such as Samford, these words strike a pleasing chord.
