The purpose of this module is to develop a general procedure to decide the feasibility of land application as a waste management alternative, given a specific problem situation. This information provides a framework within which to apply the information presented in all other modules in the program. An outline of the general procedure followed in engineering design is presented, then related to the procedure to be followed for land application. The design procedure is divided into a two-level approach. The first level is intended to roughly approximate the initial feasibility determination for this technology. Major problems created by water management, solids and organic characteristics of the wastes, nutrients, toxic elements, and site determination are identified. This analysis is illustrated by the design example on land application of harbor dredge spoil. Level II analysis makes use of the comprehensive modules to examine the limiting factors in detail and other major concerns which will affect the final problem solution. (Author/BB)
