Child Sexual Abuse Prevention: How to Take the First Steps.
This booklet provides advice and guidelines for persons interested in developing and implementing child sexual abuse prevention programs. Eight steps to child sexual abuse prevention are outlined. Step 1 involves recognition that child sexual abuse can be prevented, and provides facts to use when discussing sexual abuse. Step 2 highlights ways of identifying and contacting community resources and services for prevention programming. Step 3 suggests ways to answer community concerns about child sexual abuse prevention education. Step 4 presents operating assumptions used by Illusion Theater, the guide developer, which can serve as a basis for a prevention program philosophy. Step 5, Getting Started, provides guidelines for the size and scope of a program, setting reasonable goals, and gaining access to schools. Phases in developing a child sexual abuse prevention education program are listed and a flow chart of general program development is included. Step 6, Using Existing Resources, lists Illusion Theater resources, and books, curricula, films, videotapes, booklets and miscellaneous materials from other sources. Step 7 discusses evaluation concerns and lists several programs that conducted evaluations. The final step, Moving Toward Prevention, gives suggestions to help society move toward the prevention of child sexual abuse. A list of prevention contacts is also provided. (NRB)
