Developing 21st Century Process Skills through Project Design

The goal of this paper is to illustrate how the promotion of 21st Century process skills can be used to enhance student learning and workplace skill development: thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, leadership, and management. As an illustrative case, fashion merchandising and design students conducted research for a hypothetical retail store and produced a shopping bag prototype to reflect their target consumers' lifestyle and mission of the organization. The students expressed positive perceptions of their learning experiences vis-à-vis the 21st Century process skills. Incorporation of the 21st Century process skills framework expanded the students' learning experiences and workplace skills. Suggestions are made for educators to be proactive in curricular development to hone these process skills.
