Helping Families Reach Their PEAK: Partnerships That Promote Family Empowerment
Passmore, Amanda H.; Zarate, Kary
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v53 n4 p310-318 Mar-Apr 2021
The unique role of parents and caregivers of students with disabilities has led to the incorporation of parent involvement as one of the six foundational principles of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Despite this vision of parent involvement within IDEA, families often feel as if they are passive recipients of special education services as opposed to crucial stakeholders. The purpose of this article is to introduce educators to a structure for supporting family collaboration and empowerment when it comes to supporting home-to-school partnerships for students with a disability. The goals of the structure are encompassed in the acronym PEAK, which stands for "partnerships of empowerment, accessibility, and knowledge." The aim of this structure is to provide educators access to systems that will encourage feelings of empowerment in caregivers of students with disabilities as they seek to create active partnerships.
