Cardinal Newman: His Importance for Catholic Education
Martín-Sánchez, Miguel; Cáceres-Muñoz, Jorge
International Studies in Catholic Education, v8 n1 p29-43 2016
John Henry Newman was one of the most outstanding figures of the social and religious panorama in the nineteenth century in Great Britain. His educational approaches framed in the movement of Catholic education and his influence on the Oxford Movement, his intellectualism and reflections on faith, reason and education, and participation and planning of the Catholic University of Ireland, make him very interesting. We are going to approach John Henry Newman's educational thought in this work by analysing three fundamental points of view: the Oxford Movement and its tracts, his intellectualism and the relationship between faith and reason, and the idea of university. These points of view allow us to establish the foundations of a Catholic pedagogy, which is the most neglected in the work dedicated to the English cardinal.
