Courses in Media Ethics. A Spring 1977 Survey.
Christians, Clifford G.
A questionnaire regarding the teaching of media ethics courses was sent to communication program administrators in 1977. This paper reports the responses obtained from 237 programs (96% response rate). For the 27% of schools reporting specific courses in ethics, the paper notes the number and types of schools with ethics courses, the place of ethics courses in the curriculum, and specific types of courses offered; for the remaining schools, it reports the reasons given for not teaching such courses. The paper also presents findings concerning pedagogical techniques used by media ethics instructors, the value systems stressed in ethics courses, and textbook materials used, and it offers general observations on the data. Titles of specific audiovisual materials and textbooks mentioned by survey respondents are included. (GW)
