Merging Environmental Health and Education
Guth, Douglas J.
Community College Journal, v87 n1 p12-17 Aug-Sep 2016
Community colleges nationwide are retrofitting their campuses to meet best environmental principles, creating comprehensive "living laboratories" where participants have a direct impact on reducing an institution's carbon footprint. Environmental stewardship is a growing priority among millennials, observers say. Sixty-six percent of millennial-age participants interviewed in a 2014 poll commissioned by the Clinton Global Initiative and Microsoft said there is "solid evidence" the earth is getting warmer, with 75 percent of respondents blaming human activity for potentially harmful climate change. Raritan Valley Community College (New Jersey), Western Technical College (Wisconsin), and Georgia Piedmont Technical College have created living laboratories to provide their students with real-world skills while helping these institutions meet their sustainability goals
