Engineering Encounters: Identifying an Engineering Design Problem

Engineering is an intriguing way for students to connect the design process with their knowledge of science (NRC 2012). This article describes the "Engineering a Pancake Recipe" design process which was created to make the structure and properties of matter more meaningful for fifth grade students. The whole pancake recipe engineering experience helped students connect chemistry with their everyday lives. They became aware of the origins of recipes and the importance of careful measurement. Students used their scientific knowledge concerning the properties of materials, acids, bases, and chemical reactions that occur when heat is applied. They engaged in the design process relating to chemical engineering and were introduced to an expert within STEM occupations. These rich experiences broadened their understanding of how science and engineering are intertwined in our daily lives and inspired them to consider further investigations in cooking and baking outside of school.
