The higher education landscape has changed considerably in the past decade, with the introduction of a range of flexible work-related opportunities to allow working people to study and progress at higher levels. This includes the development of modes of delivery such as distance and e-learning options, but also new ways of working between universities, colleges, training providers and businesses to tailor provision to meet the changing needs of employers and employees in terms of career progression. Making a success of these changes depends on improving the quality of the advice and guidance on offer to working adults. Foundation Degree Forward (fdf) is trying to address the needs of individual learners and employers, and now of advisers and other workplace intermediaries. Working jointly with unionlearn, NIACE, Sector Skills Councils, employers and others, fdf is promoting good-quality information and advice for working adults in a number of ways. A free web-based resource for advisers has been created (at, and will be launched in April 2010. This includes links to other materials and resources specifically relevant to the needs of working adults who want to progress to higher education. Training events for advisers are also being offered in 2010 to explore some of the issues and to look at ways of using the resources.
