Assessing the Impact of Educational Development through the Lens of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Hoessler, Carolyn; Britnell, Judy; Stockley, Denise
New Directions for Teaching and Learning, n122 p81-89 Sum 2010
In this article, the authors convey what scholarship of teaching and learning is and is not, and how educational developers can and do engage in such scholarship to grow as individual providers, units, and academic institutions seeking to continue improving teaching and learning. Further, the advancement of effective teaching techniques, expansion of theory on student learning, and the growth of teaching assistant and instructor training call for continuous scholarship as a key facet of educational development. Scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is the litmus test for identifying and sharing the educational development practices that have an impact on teaching and student learning. In addition, by engaging instructors and administration in SoTL, educational developers can support the advancement of teaching at their institution. The resulting SoTL constitutes a shared foundation of effective practices and theory for educational developers to draw on as informed consultants and general idea connectors.
