Navarro, Elvia Lorena
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, New Mexico State University
The current qualitative study explored the factors and resources that motivate undocumented Latino/a college students to persist in higher education. Through the data obtained from the four qualitative open-ended survey questions, a content analysis revealed specific codes, themes, and subthemes addressing the factors and resources that motivate undocumented Latino/a college students, which were organized under the four overarching categories (i.e. the four open ended qualitative questions): (1) Persistence factors that have contributed to their motivation and optimism towards staying in school; (2) Sources of support and encouragement to persist in school; (3) Challenges and how these challenges have been overcome; and (4) Advice and/or resources that were helpful that would be recommended for undocumented Latina/o students. Next, findings were presented and discussed through a resiliency theory lens. Three consistent protective factors were identified among resilient individuals: (1) personal characteristics; (2) supportive family; (3) external support and resources. Along with an overall category for challenges and risk factors overcome, which will be presented through quotes illustrating the participants' unique voice. Suggestions for future research and implications of the results are also discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
