Earthcycles: Environmental Education with Preschool Children.
Lewis-Webber, Mavis
Early childhood educators and parents face the task of educating young children in Canada about environmental issues. The sooner young children participate in activities with an environmental theme, the more likely they are to appreciate the environment. This booklet is designed to introduce early childhood educators to environmental education with preschool children. Fourteen hands-on activities are presented to expose children to: (1) lifecycle of plants or objects; (2) how objects decompose; (3) what garbage is; (4) how to prepare a lunch without garbage; (5) trees; (6) birds; (7) ecosystems; (8) wildflower identification; (9) the community plant life; (10) earthcycles; (11) earthworms; (12) water quality; and (13) air pollution. Each activity provides background information, instructions on how to prepare; procedures to carry out the activity, and other activity ideas to explore. A selected bibliography of 38 citations contains children's book resources, identification resources, and activity resources. (MDH)
