The report includes a section on substance use, violent behavior, and school performance in adolescence. Findings indicate that there have been improvements in teen birth and pregnancy rates; average wages and per capita income; child poverty; number of children without health insurance; infant mortality rate; early prenatal care rates; immunizations; mortality from medical conditions (10 to 19 years); fourth graders meeting adequate reading, math, and listening standards; mortality from unintentional injuries (birth to 14 years); and homicide mortality. However, worsening rates are evident in number of divorces involving children, number of children in out-of-home care, foster care caseloads, low birthweight rate, mortality from medical conditions (1 to 9 years), suicide mortality, number of fourth graders meeting adequate writing standards, child abuse and neglect referrals, and domestic violence arrests. The report concludes with information on data sources. (KB)
