Impact Parent Program Workshop Leader's Manual.
Marvelle, John D., Comp.; And Others
This program manual provides a series of eight two-hour sessions designed to further parents' abilities to teach and communicate with their young children and to build supportive family school relationships. Session I introduces the series and emphasizes the important role parents have as teachers of their children. In Session II an overview of child growth and development is provided which stresses the importance of the quality of time parents spend with children. Session III indicates how children learn and includes an exercise in task analysis. Session IV introduces a typical kindergarten curriculum through "hands-on" activities and discussion. The last four sessions focus on the importance of effective communication, children's behavior and techniques for coping with unacceptable behavior. Session V stresses the importance of communication in understanding children. Session VI emphasizes the importance of the child's self-concept and provides guidelines for disciplining children. In Session VII the basic principles of behavior are reviewed. Parents learn how to define behavior specifically and also learn three techniques for solving behavior problems. In Session VIII parents discuss their implementation of a technique for changing their child's behavior. Transparency originals, a booklet of multi-skill activities for young children titled "Parents: You Are Teachers" and leader guides for the program sessions are appended. Some sessions include slide and film presentations as well as homework activities for parents. (Author/RH)
