Online Learning: Research Readings.
Guthrie, Hugh, Ed.
This book comprises an overview and 11 chapters that address issues related to flexible approaches to delivery and online learning in particular. "Overview" (Guthrie) highlights key points drawn from the chapters. "Does Digital Literacy Mean More Than Clicking Your Fingers?" (Candy) discusses the importance of information and communication technologies (ICT) literacy for survival in today's fast-changing world. "The Partnership Challenge" (Kearns) reports on this message from an international study of policy relating to ICT in education: that the secret to realizing the full potential of ICT as a learning tool lies in building partnerships. "One Size Doesn't Fit All" (Brennan) discusses pedagogical implications of online delivery of teaching and training in light of rapid, substantial technological change. "Quality in Online Learning" (Cashion, Palmieri) reports a study that showed vocational education and training (VET) students reacted well to online learning and stressed the key importance of good teachers, facilitators, and tutors to successful, high quality online teaching. "The Development of Quality Online Assessment in VET" (Hyde, Booth, Wilson) focuses on a study that showed the most effective use of online assessment is achieved when educational objectives are clearly linked to assessment activities. "Learner Expectations and Experiences" (Choy, McNickle, Clayton) recognizes the importance of provision of services to support online students in every aspect of the online experience. "Online Learning" (Curtain) outlines settings in which online learning is or is not likely to be cost-effective. "E-Business and Online Learning" (Mitchell) examines connections between these two and considers opportunities for the VET sector arising from them. "Think Strategy" (Schofield) synthesizes findings from four exploratory case studies of how companies think about and experience e-learning. "Online Delivery and Learning in Regional Australia" (Kilpatrick, Bound) describes a study that mapped online delivery to determine "what" is happening and "why.""Regional Perspectives on Online Learning" (Horton, Osborne) covers a study of key determinants of whether rural populations were benefiting from online learning.
