Evaluation of the SYSTRAN Automatic Translation System. Report No. 5.
Chaumier, Jacques; And Others
The Commission of the European Communities has acquired an automatic translation system (SYSTRAN), which has been put into operation on an experimental basis. The system covers translation of English into French and comprises a dictionary for food science and technology containing 25,000 words or inflections and 4,500 expressions. This report summarizes the findings and conclusions of an evaluation study of the economic and linguistic performance of the system, and contains: (1) a description of test conditions; (2) results of the evaluation of the quality of translation; (3) results of the cost evaluation; and (4) recommendations drawn from these results. Two of the recommendations involve the further development of the current software and dictionary and the development of software and dictionaries for other languages and fields. Certain other studies involving system operations are also recommended. Appendices contain examples of good and bad translation. (AM)
