The data suggest that high level practicum instructors are usually able to offset the effects of low level individual supervisors. Use of Carkhuff level 3 response, a Carkhuff level 5 response, and probing with regard to perceived helpfulness were investigated by having inmates view videotapes of eight role-played counselor-inmate interactions. High-facilitative counselors were perceived more positively than were low-facilitative counselors. The data suggest a relationship between Strong's and Carkhuff's models for counseling. Psychoanalytic theory and cognitive dissonance theory predict that clients who pay a fee for counseling benefit more than clients who do not pay. Students viewing a therapy session excerpt were told about the counselors' reputation, credentials, fees, or androgynous personality. Results indicated that the androgynous therapist received the most credible and attractive ratings, while the high-fee-charging therapist received the least credible rating. (JAC)

Five counselor performance measures were investigated for their application and use in state-federal vocational rehabilitation agencies using approximately 200 counselors in each of three years.
