One way that Wendy Harris, a high school social studies teacher at a Deaf school in Saint Paul, MN, advance this goal is through a civic engagement project in which students have to take an action of their choice about an issue that is important to them. She developed a lesson focused on the 1977 Section 504 protests. Section 504 is the part of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in federally-funded programs. In 1977, frustrated that Section 504 regulations had not yet been established, individuals and groups began to mobilize in protest. Overall, she found this lesson helped students analyze protest and activism strategies that they have been seeing in the news, while also determining what type of civic action they personally could take on issues important to them. Explicitly teaching intersectionality while looking at a protest with powerful, far-reaching results shines a spotlight on often-excluded history in school curriculum while also showing creative and impactful actions that individuals can take together to make change.
