Instructional Note: Microthemes--A Utility Assignment for Any Class

This note offers suggestions for using microthemes in diverse classes across the curriculum. Microthemes are short essays (100 to 250 words) that can be used in any class to address any issue. They are so versatile that Ray Smith has called them the "Swiss Army knife of writing assignments" (1) because they have so many applications: they can be narrative, summary, thesis support, or many other types. Also, they can be used as a spontaneous learning tool or as an assessment of progress in a course. Regardless of type, they all require careful construction and judicious use of materials. Though some teachers restrict students to what they can write on one side of a 5 x 8 inch index card and others allow up to 500 words, the author of this paper prefers to allow students a maximum of one typed, double-spaced page (a maximum of about 250 words) for their microthemes. Student responses to microthemes seem to go through at least three predictable phases. At first, students experience relief at not having to write longer papers; next, they feel overwhelmed by the notion that they only have one page to say everything. Finally, they realize that saying something meaningful in a page is possible if the writer works at the task and is willing to revise.
