Collaborations for Literacy. An Intergenerational Reading Project. Administrator's Handbook.
Nickse, Ruth S.; Englander, Nancy
"Collaborations for Literacy" is a project conducted at Boston University (Massachusetts) that uses college work-study students to teach adults to read through reading to and with a child. This instruction is provided at two Boston neighborhood sites (Jackson-Mann Community School and the Brighton branch of the Boston Public Library). The project uses the "Reading Rainbow" television series and its featured books as motivation and as the basis for cooperative adult-child reading activities facilitated by the college student-tutor. This administrator's handbook describes the project and provides tips for developing a work-study tutoring program on other college campuses. The book is organized in six sections. The first section provides an overview of the "Collaborations for Literacy" project in a question-and-answer format. In the second section, the problem of adult literacy and some approaches to remedying it are described. Section 3 describes the "Collaborations for Literacy" project, including staff, sponsors, and funding. In the fourth section, the tutoring approach used by "Collaborations for Literacy" is described; in the following extensive section, suggestions for setting up a similar work-study tutoring program are given. Plans are outlined in a step-by-step task-oriented way, and blank forms are provided. The final section offers insights and perspectives on adult literacy projects from the perspective of the two years of operation of the "Collaboration for Literacy" program. A bibliography is included in the guide. (KC)
