Student Financial Aid and Educational Outcomes: Is There a Difference between Grants and Loans? ASHE 1987 Annual Meeting Paper.

The effects of different types of student financial aid on student outcomes were investigated for the year 1983: types of support looked at included scholarships, working while attending school, grants, and loans. Attention was directed to four outcome measures that reflect in-school behaviors and attitudes that affect student performance: student-faculty integration, student satisfaction, college grade point average (GPA), and progression rate. Multivariate analysis was employed, controlling for student and college characteristics, and student financial situation. The study sample consisted of 3,056 students 23 years old or younger from 30 southern and eastern U.S. colleges. Comparisons for black and white students were also undertaken. Results indicate that different forms of financial support have different effects on the outcomes. Working effects were positive on student-faculty integration and satisfaction, and no negative effects were found for GPA and progression rate. For those who received financial aid, getting a loan decreased the degree of student-faculty integration, but it improved college GPA and the rate of progression through school. Grants had a substantial positive effect on both student-faculty integration and GPA. (SW)
