Youth and Wildlife: The Beliefs and Behaviors of Fifth and Sixth Grade Students Regarding Non-Domestic Animals.
Westervelt, Miriam O.; Llewellyn, Lynn G.
This report analyzes the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of a random national sample of 3,087 fifth and sixth grade students from 15,787 respondents to a Wildlife Survey distributed in "Weekly Reader" periodicals. The questionnaire examined the prevalence of four basic orientations toward wildlife (humanistic, moralistic, naturalistic, and negativistic), preference for specific kinds of wild animals, level of factual knowledge, and popularity of eight wildlife-oriented behaviors. Children expressed more sentimental affection for loveable kinds of animals than naturalistic interest in wildlife, and demonstrated limited knowledge about wildlife. The results also indicated widespread disapproval of sport hunting, even among rural residents. Attitudes were more favorable toward hunting for food. The positive influences of engaging in certain wildlife-oriented activities, such as identifying birds, belonging to an animal club, and hunting was evident. Children's behaviors toward wildlife, however, more frequently took the form of fishing, watching wildlife programs on television, and going to the zoo. Recommendations for educators and wildlife professionals include gearing educational activities to the needs of specific demographic groups (younger children and urban residents), integrating materials into established school curricula, and increasing the quality and number of opportunities for both direct and indirect sources of contact with wildlife. This report contains 38 references. (Author/KS)
