Younger spouses initially manifested greater grief; older spouses showed exacerbated grief reactions. While denial seemed to be a defense against anxiety, elevations on the Social Isolation, Depersonalization, and Death Anxiety scales for older spouses showed the debilitating effects of loneliness and fear.
