Evaluation of Doctor of Education Student Attrition: A Phenomenological Study
Cyrus, Aaron
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The documented study is a phenomenological form of interpretive research examining attrition in doctoral programs for persons from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. It sought to establish how students formulate reasons for quitting doctoral education---the cases being for doctorates in education. The study uses a sample of 33 former students who quit their programs for various reasons. After completing questionnaires, 10 of the 33 respondents were interviewed in semi-structured interviews and the data collected was analyzed thematically to determine reasons for attrition. The main categories of attrition are inadequacies in institutional support where noncompleters formulate explanations related to material support, morale, social, and intellectual support; the category of impediments to family or social life where students struggle with issues of isolation, loss of quality time for social needs, and the effects of financial disruptions; and the category of health and wellness which includes disruptive personal health emergencies, health problems among family and friends, and deteriorating health as a result of lifestyle associated with pursuing a terminal degree. More institutional support and comprehensive approach to managing student needs and expectations is recommended.
