Pre-Service Physical Educators: Their Demographics, Wellness Practices, and Teaching Interests
Melville, D. Scott; Hammermeister, Jon
Physical Educator, v63 n2 p69-77 Spr 2006
A nationwide survey of pre-service physical education majors/minors was completed during the 2003-2004 academic year (N = 755). Demographic information collected included age, gender, athletic background, Body Mass Index (BMI) and racial/ethnic background. Wellness practices were surveyed (physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco/alcohol use). Teaching interests were examined with regards to preferred subjects and ability/grade levels. The students were young (M = 22.79), predominately men (62.5%), largely Caucasian (83%), with athletic backgrounds. Most were physically active, but nutrition/alcohol practices were poor. Body Mass Index (BMI) scores were high (M = 25.22). They had a greater interest in working with above average students than with the less skilled. Teaching at the secondary level was preferred over the elementary and middle school levels. (Contains 4 tables.)
