A system using educational discounts on services in a veterinary teaching hospital went awry one year when the allocation was overspent. Subsequent stringencies imposed succeeded in keeping a balanced budget, while income in fact increased. Caseloads improved and there were efficiencies gained in length of stay. Factors that influence the efficiency of laboratory experiences include: size of laboratory group, length of session, discussion, special tools, and applications of knowledge learned. Studied how students with high and low levels of self-regulation responded to and approached case-based learning was studied with 9 students representing high and low self-regulation levels among a class of 58 veterinary students. Students with high self-regulation were more likely to value case-based instruction. (SLD)
