The general purpose of the twelfth grade course is to help the student assume his role as a decision-maker in a democratic society. The nature and complexity of contemporary problems are examined using this guide to enable the student: 1) to analyze alternative solutions to these problems; 2) to develop attitudes and values appropriate to a democratic society; 3) to learn how to acquire a fund of knowledge which will enable him to participate intelligently in the political and cultural life of his times; and, 4) to develop the skills necessary for critical thinking. Three major social science disciplines and history are the integral parts of this interdisciplinary course: economics, political science, and sociology. The guide is flexible with each unit containing an overview, objectives, content questions, learning activities, and resources. The units and suggested times are: 1) Man in Society, two weeks; 2) Is Our Constitutional Democracy Adequate; six weeks, 3) Urban Problems, seven weeks; 4) The American Economic System, seven weeks; 5) Crime as a Problem in the United States, two weeks; and, 6) The Causes of World Tensions, seven weeks.
