Keeping the Peace: Practicing Cooperation and Conflict Resolution with Preschoolers.
Wichert, Susanne
This guide provides detailed and useful information about how to help children develop skills that allow them to practice conflict resolution. The first section, "The Setting," considers the environment and how it can enhance the qualities required for successful conflict resolution and minimize unnecessary conflict. The four chapters in this section discuss goals and objectives, personal values clarification, the physical environment, and definition of limits. The second section, "Interacting with Children," considers the daily role adults can play in helping children develop the attitudes and skills necessary for conflict resolution. The five chapters in this section discuss play alternatives that stress cooperation; the influence of books on children's understanding of themselves, others, and the conflicts they experience; and the basic skills in conflict resolution--empathy and understanding of consequence, communication, and negotiation. The final section contains 30 different activities that were each designed to meet several of the following objectives: cooperative task completion; improved communication skills; body awareness; self-esteem or affirmation; altruistic behavior; analogy and consensus; preliminary activity (to establish basic skills); and fun. The appendix includes a list of 17 additional resources and groups. Contains 71 references. (TJQ)
