The Impact of a Community College Bridge Program on Adult Learners
Bennett, Yolanda
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
The purpose of this study was to show the impact of community college transition programs on adult learners and on adult learners transitioning to post-secondary institutions. The research has shown that there is a great need for transition programs because adult learners, specifically those who have entered English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Education Development (GED) programs, show a greater need due to the barriers. This quantitative study was conducted at a large Midwestern suburban community college and measured data collected from a diverse student population. The data included pre and post test scores, test scores from CASAS and TABE test, and a Likert-like survey. The results from this study showed that the bridge program had an impact on those students who participated in the program; in addition, it revealed that there was significance found in the areas of classroom instruction and equipment and technology. The study furthered revealed that the bridge program had a successful impact on those students who completed the program. As a result, students were better off from participating in the bridge program. The study concluded that further research would be needed to determine if the program could be measured one year after students transitioned to a postsecondary institution or the work force.
