Continuing Education Outcome Measures Project, Maryland Community Colleges: Final Report, Fiscal Year 1988.
Pinkney, Hercules
The Maryland State Board for Community Colleges designed a project to develop outcome measures for continuing education and to conduct a survey of vocational-technical continuing education students at Maryland community colleges. Five types of outcomes were identified for inclusion in a performance profile for college programs: student pass rate on selected certification examinations, employer satisfaction with business and industry training courses, completion rates of students enrolled in courses with completion requirements, student ratings of the quality of instruction, and student indication of goal achievement. In the process of developing specific measures for these outcomes, a statewide survey of continuing education students was conducted. Selected findings included the following: (1) in fiscal year 1987, 144,081 students took over 6,991 state-supported continuing education courses at Maryland community colleges; (2) 91% of the students said that they had completed all course requirements; (3) 89% rated instruction as "good" or "very good" and said that they would recommend the courses to others; and (4) nearly 75% indicated that they had achieved their goals. Attached to the final project report are "Continuing Education Outcomes," a description of the outcome measures selected for performance profiles for apprenticeship training, licensure/certification, and business and industry training; and "Continuing Education Student Follow-Up Report," which includes a profile of continuing education students, information on course completion and goal achievement, and student ratings of instruction and program administration. The questionnaire is attached. (AACZ)
