Promoting Culturally Responsive Standards-Based Teaching
Saifer, Steffen; Barton, Rhonda
Principal Leadership, v8 n1 p24-28 Sep 2007
Culturally responsive standards-based (CRSB) teaching can help bring diverse school communities together and make learning meaningful. Unlike multicultural education--which is an important way to incorporate the world's cultural and ethnic diversity into lessons--CRSB teaching draws on the experiences, understanding, views, concepts, and ways of knowing of the students who are in a particular class or school. CRSB teaching promotes six essential elements that are embedded and woven throughout classroom practice: (1) It is always student centered; (2) It has the power to transform; (3) It is connected and integrated; (4) It fosters critical thinking; (5) It incorporates assessment and reflection; and (6) It builds relationships and community. In this article, the authors provide steps for implementing CRSB teaching and offer a variety of examples--both simple and complex--of ways to incorporate CRSB teaching into the classroom.
