A Quantitative Correlational Study of Online Faculty's Ethics Positions and Leadership Practices
Bradley Neil Burgess
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine if, and to what extent, there is a relationship between online faculty ethics positions and their transformational leadership practices at multiple four-year universities in the southeastern United States. It was not known if, and to what extent, there is a relationship between online faculty ethics positions and their transformational leadership practices at multiple four-year universities in the southeastern United States, which is an important matter due to the proliferation of online educational programs. Research questions were utilized for this quantitative correlation study based on the hypotheses. It was hypothesized that a relationship exists between online faculty ethics positions and leadership practices. There are seven study variables: Idealism, Relativism, Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The conceptual framework for this study was based on the ethics position model developed by Forsyth (1980) and leadership practices based on the theory of transformational leadership developed by Kouzes and Posner (2011). The target population for this study was online faculty at institutions located in the southeastern United States. The survey was completed by 100 participants who met the criteria for this study. The results of this research revealed that there was a significant relationship at the p < 0.001 level between each of the ethics position variables and each of the leadership practices among online faculty at multiple four-year universities. Based on the results, a positive correlation existed between the ethics positions of Idealism and Relativism and all five of the transformational leadership practices.
