Kluge, Mary Ann; Glick, Linda K.; Engleman, Laura L.; Hooper, Jacqueline Savis
Educational Gerontology, v33 n3 p187-207 Mar 2007
This study evaluated baccalaureate nursing (n = 35) and allied health care (AHC) (n = 25) students' perceptions of a 5-week Therapeutic Communication (TC) module that was part of their foundations coursework. The module allowed students to practice communication skills using iView[c], an innovative computer-based simulation of clinical encounters. The module also utilized other pedagogical tools. Results indicate that after taking the course nursing students were significantly more likely to report increased confidence and competence and future practice intent in using TC skills with various populations, including older adults. The implications of these findings for TC skills education among all types of health care students are discussed. Includes appendix: Definition of Communication Skills and Blocks. (Contains 3 tables.)
