Barriers to Innovative Business Systems Adoption Experienced by Higher Education Managers

The rationale for this study was to add to the body of knowledge regarding higher education adoption of enterprise resource planning systems. Literature indicates a gap in ERP adoption knowledge regarding higher education managers. The following two questions are the basis for this study: What barriers do higher education managers experience in the diffusion and adoption of ERP systems and what strategies do higher education managers use to mitigate perceived barriers associated with ERP diffusion and adoption? A qualitative single case study was used to explore the research questions. Nineteen higher education managers participated from various institutions and with varying levels of managerial experience. Publicly available documents and artifacts gathered from respective institution websites and survey data provided further information. Triangulation took place through comparison of interviews, survey data, and the documents and artifacts from website information. Analysis of the data uncovered key factors managers experienced regarding barriers and the mitigations used for those barriers. Factors included managers who struggled with tenured employees, the time length of installs, articulation of business processes, and the "no choice" of adoption. Findings included problems tenured employees faced regarding the adoption of new systems and the inability to articulate business processes related to using existing or new technology. Mitigations used by managers included in-depth training opportunities and using multiple methods to train employees. Managers also aided employees by providing opportunities to test and articulate business processes in the new systems.
