It's Not Just about the Technology--It's What You Do with It That Counts
Oblinger, Diana G.
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v50 n3-4 p40-43 2018
Originally it was about the technology. Networks. Processors. Software. Hardware. The uses of the technology improved efficiency and convenience. Word processing was a great time saver. Index cards were abandoned with student names or courses for administrative systems and ERPs (Enterprise Resource Planning systems). Learning systems began to emerge. As the adoption of technology expanded, educators learned that it's not just about the technology--it's what you do with it that counts. Although technology has come a long way, higher education still wrestles with the perception of technology as a substitute for people or as a low-cost alternative. Author, Diana Oblinger, suggests in this article that IT's true value is combinatorial, integrating the digital and physical, and that one need not choose between people and technology. Future challenges are discussed.
