Support New Teachers and Keep Them Teaching
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n9 p40-42 May 2005
In this article, the author discusses the need of support for new teachers and keep them teaching. New teachers will need to be hired, as much as many teachers leave the teaching profession. There are various reasons why teachers leave their profession. These includes, dissatisfaction with administrative support as well as workplace conditions. While most teachers choose to enter the profession to make a difference in the lives of children, they may quickly begin to feel a sense of isolation and disenchantment that discourages them from staying. Some educators feel that they must be helped to recognize that it will take time to feel comfortable in the classroom and learn the school and district culture. Mentoring is vital. Veteran teachers can become exhilarated by sharing their experience with a novice teacher, and new teachers gain indispensable knowledge.
