Teacher Hiring, Evaluation, and Inservice Training.
Kellogg, Robert C.
Three tasks are involved in acquiring and developing quality teachers to educate deaf students: hiring, evaluation, and inservice training. The section on "Teacher Hiring" focuses on developing an applicant pool, screening applicants, interviewing, and selecting the new hire. The next section, "Teacher Evaluation," outlines key principles of an evaluation plan and identifies such evaluation elements as developed objectives, observations, and summary conferences. "A Comprehensive System of Personnel Development" deals with identifying staff development needs in the areas of curriculum and instruction, educational management, behavior management, student development, professional development, and student diagnosis and assessment. Appendix A contains a copy of a guide for hiring teachers of the sensory impaired, developed by the Nebraska State Department of Education's Division of State Schools for the Sensory Impaired. Forms are included for interviewing job applicants and for interviewing references supplied by applicants. Appendix B comprises a copy of the evaluation policy and procedures of the Nebraska Schools for the Sensory Impaired. Forms are included to assist in: developing teacher-centered objectives to improve teaching performance, reporting on classroom observations, and summarizing end-of-year teacher performance. Appendix C includes personnel development procedures of the Nebraska Schools for the Sensory Impaired and a staff development survey form. (JDD)
