Primary School Teachers' Careers in England and Wales: The Relationship Between Gender, Role, Position and Promotion Aspirations.
Thornton, Mary; Bricheno, Pat
Pedagogy, Culture and Society, v8 n2 p187-206 2000
Surveyed and interviewed British elementary teachers to examine gender differences in their perceptions of their careers. Females and males indicated different concerns and influences on their careers. Reasons for not achieving promotion were multifaceted. Known and experienced disproportionate promotion of men, plus traditional gender differences in work- home orientation and contextual/situational expectations, limited career development for many women.
