Methods of Scheduling Salaries for Teachers. Third Edition. ERS Report.
Educational Research Service, Arlington, VA.
Data from the salary schedules used in this study were collected as part of the "National Survey of Salaries and Wages in Public Schools, 1986-87," conducted in fall 1986. Of the 1,031 school systems responding with usable data, 535 (52 percent) supplied schedules that could be analyzed and included in this report. An overview of features found in teacher salary schedules is provided, including discussions of the basic structure of the schedule, methods of initial placement and advancement on the schedule, salary supplements, and methods of changing teacher salary schedules. The second section consists of 17 tables summarizing the distributions of salaries scheduled for teachers classified according to four enrollment groupings. Data are also provided for the highest degree level recognized and for salary schedules derived from an index, both according to enrollment group. Six figures included with the summary tables graphically portray the data. The third section consists of 15 examples of various methods of salary scheduling selected to represent the variety of schedules found in the study. The report also contains a special section that describes the different approaches to incentive pay and how these approaches are superstructures built upon a basic salary scale on which the majority of teachers are paid.
