Exploring the Existence of Teacher Efficacy among Church Bible Teachers
Graham, Ernest Morris
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary
The purpose of this research was to explore teacher self-efficacy among church Bible teachers from a population of two Baptist Associations--Eastern Louisiana Baptist Association and Northshore Baptist Association--located in south-southeast Louisiana. From twenty-five qualifying churches, 187 Bible teachers completed the twelve-item "Bible Teacher Survey." Descriptive Statistics, Pearson Correlation Analysis, and ANOVAs analyzed the data to understand the participant responses across instrument factors/subscales--classroom management, instructional strategies, and student engagement. In addition, analyses measured different Bible teacher demographics. Four research questions guided the investigation. Research Question #1 asked, which, if any, of the three teaching tasks would be significantly related to teacher efficacy? Research Question #2, does a significant difference exist in teacher efficacy between Bible teacher's educational levels? Research Question #3, what is the relationship between a teacher's level of self-efficacy and years of Bible teacher experience? Research Question #4, asked, does a significant difference exist in teacher self-efficacy among current age groups taught by the Bible teachers? The analyzed data found teacher efficacy was high among Bible teachers across each of the subscales--classroom management, instructional strategies, and student engagement as well as significant positive correlations between the subscales and total teacher efficacy. At the same time, analysis showed no significant differences among teacher educational level and current Bible class age-groups, respectively, toward teacher self-efficacy. However, the calculated data indicated a small effect size, positive correlation between years of Bible teaching and total teacher efficacy. The study filled a gap in the teaching efficacy literature. More research is necessary to understand the unique world of Bible teacher pedagogy and the existence of self-efficacy.
