Veterans with PTSD or Traumatic Brain Injury Experiences' with College and VA and Academic Services Used; a Phenomenological Study
Robert Earl Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Veterans with PTSD and TBI find it difficult to meet the challenges in the college environment, which may contribute to higher attrition rates among these veterans. The emotional, mental, and psychological effects associated with PTSD or TBI can cause a disconnect in the brain and affect learning, memory, comprehension of spoken and read texts, and interpretation of oral and written texts. The problem addressed in this study was that PTSD and TBI military veterans returning to college often experience educational challenges and need VA and academic support to overcome those challenges. The purpose of this descriptive, phenomenological study was to explore how veterans with PTSD and TBI describe their experiences with course instruction and academic and VA support while attending college. The sample included 10 veterans who self-identified with PTSD or TBI who were currently attending or had attended a 2 or 4 year college or university after returning from their most recent tour of duty. The data were gathered using open-ended interview questions face to face or by phone. The findings were that 60% of the participants had problems and issues comprehending reading materials and writing classroom assignments due to their PTSB and TBI. Further, 80% of the participants noted that college funding and healthcare for veterans with PTSD and TBI are provided by the Veteran's Administration. The third recommendation is for there to be a qualitative study conducted on veterans who did not compete their college degree, to find out why the veterans left college and what support they need to return to college. One recommendation for further research is to conduct a qualitative study with veterans who did not compete their college degree, to find out why the veterans left college and what support they need to return to college.
