This publication contains the proceedings of the 1970 Summer Conference of the Speech Communication Association which explored the practical implications of recent research in the field for classroom teachers. Included are (1) four papers by Barbara Wood, Frederick Williams, Gerald R. Miller, and Lawrence Rosenfield, who were commissioned to write papers dealing with the educational implications of recent research in children's communication, social dialects, communication theory, and rhetorical theory, (2) reports of conference workshops on elementary, secondary, and college speech communication, (3) a multi-media lecture-demonstration by Lawrence Rosenfield from an undergraduate communications course, (4) addresses by W. James Popham, who surveys "criterion-referenced" instruction, and by Charles Hurst, Jr., who discusses race and racism, (5) reactions to the commissioned papers by 6 conference participants, (6) papers by Charles T. Brown on human relations and speech communications research, by Eldonna Evertts on the practical implications of language research for elementary teachers, and by Grace Holt on the implications of communication research in teaching the Black child, and (7) taped excerpts from the general sessions.
