Historical Survey of School Enrollment within Boundaries of the Albuquerque Public School District: Public, Private, Parochial. 1977-78 to 1986-87.
Alexander, Betty
An enrollment survey was conducted for the 10-year period of 1977-78 to 1986-87 in an effort to determine how many children were attending school within the Albuquerque Public School (APS) district boundaries in public, private, and parochial schools. The survey was conducted annually following the 20th day of each school year. The total school population of all public, private, and parochial schools located within the district ranged from 90,755 students in 1977-78 to 83,260 students in 1982-83. Since 1982-83, the total school population has demonstrated a steady increase. Public school enrollment peaked in 1977-78 with 92.5% of the total student population and declined to a low of 89.7% in 1983-84. Since then, public school enrollment has steadily increased, reaching 90% of the total student population in 1986-87. Private/parochial enrollment has demonstrated a slow, steady increase from a low of 7.6% of the total student population in 1977-78 to a high of 10.3% in 1984-85. The number of students in the private parochial sector has increased while the percentage of the total student population has dwindled. Cumulative data show that in the past 10 years the APS enrollment dropped by 3,943 students. Whereas the high school and middle school enrollment declined, the elementary enrollment increased by 3,768 students bringing APS to within 175 of the total population loss. This document contains tables that list all the 10-year information for public, private, and parochial schools, as well as for home schools. (ALL)
