An Examination of the Current Threat of Dismissal of Public High School English Teachers Because of Controversy About Selected Reading Materials and Suggested Activities for Teachers.
Ball, Revonda Jean
This study examines the question of using controversial literature in the secondary school classroom from legal and professional standpoints and provides suggestions for activities whereby English teachers may avoid dismissal. The contents include: (1) a discussion of the question of standards, both of the community and of the profession, which emphasizes the need for the teacher to become familiar with community standards in order to prepare himself more thoroughly for his work; (2) reasons for community objections to controversial literature and a discussion of why pressure groups have objected to some literary works; (3) a discussion of the legal aspects of the censorship problem and an examination of censorship controversies which were resolved out of court; and (4) several conclusions and suggestions for planning units of courses to meet the needs of students for literature.
