Examining the Postsecondary Decision-Making Behaviors of Rural Latina/o Youth and Factors That Predict Enrollment
Ramirez, Nestor Alexis; Meece, Judith L.
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
Despite calls by policymakers and educators to increase college access, various student subgroups are often ignored by the research community. For example, the process through which rural Latinx students choose to enroll in college and the types of colleges they matriculate to is understudied in the literature. This study addresses the limitations of the research literature by exploring enrollment trends of rural Latinx students, comparing those trends to non-Latinx students, and employing a college choice framework (Perna, 2006) to examine factors that predict enrollment for both groups. Analyses suggest that several individual and school characteristics affect the odds of enrollment for rural Latinx students. Latinx and non-Latinx youth differed in the characteristics that predicted enrollment at two-year and four-year institutions.
