Rhetorical and Demonstrative Modes of Visual Argument: Looking at Images of Human Evolution.
Shelley, Cameron
Argumentation and Advocacy, v33 n2 p53-68 Fall 1996
Examines interaction between demonstrative and rhetorical modes of visual argumentation by drawing upon two examples: the first includes illustrations from paleoanthropological debates on the origins of modern humans; the second references the widely disseminated "march of progress" image of human evolution. Concludes that rhetorical visual arguments are conveyed by pictures in a manner similar to informal arguments. (PA)
