This report contains a transcript of the presentations of the primary speakers at a consultation on day care and the public schools organized by The Interchurch Center in New York. In addition to the presentations, the report provides highlights from a round table discussion of the issues raised by the speakers. Presentations described preliminary findings of a national survey of state initiatives for preschool education which compares states, with and without legislative initiatives, in terms of impact on schools, the child care community, and families. Speakers also pointed out concerns of the National Black Child Development Institute about preschool care for racially ethnic children and challenged participants to view education from theological perspectives and to think deeply and broadly. Included in the report is the resolution on 4-year-olds in the public schools which was adopted May 22, 1986, by the National Council of Churches of Christ in the United States of America. (RH)
