Did Teachers' Verbal Ability and Race Matter in the 1960s? "Coleman" Revisited.
Ehrenberg, Ronald G.; Brewer, Dominic J.
Economics of Education Review, v14 n1 p1-21 1995
Reanalyzes data from the classic 1966 Coleman Report. Addresses whether teacher characteristics, including verbal ability and race, influenced students'"synthetic gain scores." Findings support this hypothesis. Verbal scores mattered equally for black teachers and white teachers. Black teachers were associated with higher gain scores for black students but lower gain scores for white students. (83 references) (MLH)
