Massachusetts' 1873 establishment of a public art/design college provides lessons as we debate public investment in the arts and redefine the government's role. Public support depends on developing a broad array of mutual interests; cultural and education leaders must demonstrate to business, government, and the public the connection between fine and applied art; and art must address contemporary problems.
